Mindy Moore has always had the passion of theatre in her blood, having been a performer since her young days. As a high school student, she was involved with numerous stage productions. At Gallaudet University, she quickly became drawn into the television/media program. She composed scripts for and acted in campus television productions Deaf Moonlite Show, and Florida Avenue. Combining all of her passions, Mindy has written and directed numerous plays at the school, and also led the production of two short films featuring Texas School for the Deaf students. One was a ten-minute film, Bullying Others, and the other was an hour-long film, Little Deaf Spies. Little Deaf Spies was selected for the 2003 CIMI Festival in ChicagoAfter joining forces with husband and performing partner Theron Parker, Music for the Eyes, Volume I, was created. This DVD was quickly sold out, with a new release planned for the fall. The stellar duo is often found traveling the nation conducting workshops, performances, and storytelling events. Association of Late-Deafened Adults (ALDA)
www.alda.org/
The Association of Late-Deafened Adults is about communication and acceptance of every deafened individual. Some people lip-read, some sign, some use hearing aids, some have cochlear implants, and some need to have others write down what they are saying - and at ALDA all the above is okay! ALDAs official communication philosophy is "Whatever works!" What is most important about ALDA is that there are no membership restrictions, no ties to a specific mode of communication. ALDA reaches out to deafened individuals regardless of age of onset who are seeking their place as a deafened person. ALDA gives late-deafened adults a chance to mingle without being uncomfortable about their deafness and - perhaps for the first time - a chance to confront and accept their deafness (Deaf Life, May 1991). ALDA also provides a place for deaf/hearing couples to socialize with other couples who are facing similar communication issues. While many couples stop socializing when one spouse loses their hearing, couples find a comfortable place at ALDA to socialize where communication is easier. (ALDAcon 2006 Proceedings/Bill Graham). |

Deaf Women United
www.dwu.org/
Deaf Women United is committed to continuing a community of support of Deaf women from all walks of life. You can play a significant role in assuring the success of our mission to promote the lives of Deaf women through empowerment, enrichment, and networking. Founded in 1985, DWU has provided in the last few decades one of the most significant changes in our country's perception of Deaf women. Women in the general society as well as in Deaf communities have assumed important responsibilities and are key people in making things better. Even so, historically, successful Deaf women did not make front-page headlines, nor were they been recognized in their lines of work. That is where DWU has made a difference. The impact of the formed DWU was immediate, and its efforts long overdue. Today, DWU's numbers are more than half a thousand strong and it is the leader in the grassroots Deaf women's movement. DWU members are your neighbors and friends. They're Deaf women active in your local communities. There are 15 chapters throughout the United States. In the past decade, the goals of the DWU have expanded to include not only acknowledgment and acceptance for the diversity of individual Deaf women, but now include exploring how the experience of being Deaf and being a woman affects our lives. DWU does this by providing recognition to Deaf women who have not made the headlines. In the area of gender and access issues, all Deaf women can experience a double whammy of oppression. |
