Call VRS

Press Release
VRS@callVRS.info

Freedom of choice is the philosophy behind CallVRS.

Clearwater, FL [September 1, 2009] – Freedom of choice is the philosophy behind CallVRS, a video relay service (VRS) provider that opened today. “Customers and interpreters alike will find that CallVRS is not your typical VRS provider,” owner Emilia Lorenti-Wann said. “We intend to provide access to those who historically have been overlooked by VRS and we will think outside of the box to find new ways to do this.” CallVRS was created by Lorenti-Wann and co-owner Keith Wann who noticed that many video interpreters were unhappy at their respective VRS employers. “This discontent was affecting the quality of their work,” Wann said. Although Wann is renowned nationally for his comedy and performances, he is serious about quality interpreting. He and Lorenti-Wann, both certified and experienced interpreters, aspire to change the VRS interpreting culture by changing how companies treat video interpreters. “We believe that a happy interpreter makes for happy callers,” Wann added. “We have taken the finest of VRS experiences that interpreters have had and combined them, to create the strongest, highest quality service. The result will lead to positive experiences for our customers.”
VRS allows deaf and hard of hearing individuals to work with sign language interpreters for real-time telephone conversations with hearing people. CallVRS is available 24 hours a day to Deaf people with a videophone or web cam. One feature that distinguishes CallVRS from other VRS providers is that in addition to providing diverse interpreters, callers can preview interpreters’ qualifications and specialties on the CallVRS website. “That way, if a customer needs to place a call of a legal nature, the caller can look on the website to see which of our interpreters has a specialty in legal interpreting with the necessary certifications, and request that interpreter,” Lorenti-Wann said. “This can be done for all different types of calls, such as Deaf-Blind interpreting or Spanish interpreting. Or if the customer simply has a favorite interpreter, he or she can request that person as well.”

In fact, this ability to request a specific interpreter is one of the keys to successful VRS provision, Lorenti-Wann noted. “Being able to work with the same video interpreter again and again is very important to many Deaf callers and allows them to successfully conduct business,” she said. “This familiarity allows for comfort with jargon and names that may otherwise further complicate the call. By working with an interpreter who has worked with you before, you gain that level of attentiveness that can only be found with familiarity.”

The combination of quality interpreting and customer choice is the embodiment of the CallVRS experience, Lorenti-Wann said. “At CallVRS, it boils down to freedom of choice for the caller. This freedom of choice is what makes for a superior VRS experience.”
